    Sangju: Elementary School

    Teaching elementary grade kids has its pros and cons… the major draw for me is really just how cute the kids are. I adore their innocence and yet unjaded perspective on life, which is the major inspiration behind my art. I want to make books for children someday. The drawback however, is that they require more energy and patience than I could pull out of my battered soon-to-be-29-years-old body. It was therefore quite the eye-opener when I saw just how well Ottie handled his elementary classes last year, despite his preference for older kids who would be able to understand the more abstract concepts he’s so fond of dishing out.…

    Sangju: Snow Strawberries

    I spent an entire week in Sangju, helping Ottie to pack up two years of his life and saying goodbyes to friendly faces. Buses chartering through cities in South Korea are some of the most comfortable I’ve sat in. It’s a pretty efficient means of cross-country transportation, and the conductors make sure you buckle up. We finally arrive in Sangju, 2 hours south of Seoul. Man Cook was a restaurant that set up early last year; Ottie and I particularly loved the name. As Ottie used to joke when it opened, “Man cook.     Seoul: Animation & Comics

    Ottie and I headed for the Seoul Animation Center one morning. This day trip was by far one of the most exciting for me. I haven’t been practising animation in forever, but three years of studying the craft has definitely left an impression. It was incredibly cold, but we braved the winds to take some pictures with the colourful cartoon characters outside the complex: With Red & Yellow from Larva.
